Subject: Swine Flu in Jamaica.. Mon Jun 01, 2009 9:05 am |

Now, I thought swine flu was over, only to find out yesterday that there are two cases here in Jamaica. Yes, in our own backyard. Lets see what they are saying about it.
On the weekend the Health Ministry reported that there were two cases of the virus detected in St Catherine and St. Andrew.
It said the persons affected had traveled to New York in the United States which has confirmed a number of cases of the virus.
However, it is not clear when the ministry first detected the cases in Jamaica.
In a statement, the ministry said the affected persons were located by personnel from its surveillance team and the necessary investigations and follow-up visits were done.
The ministry also said both persons have recovered satisfactorily and have been declared in good health by its medical teams.
When contacted, Dr. Marion Bullock-Ducasse, the Director of Emergency Disaster Management and Special Services declined to speak about the cases, instead said that a release would be issued on the matter today.
However, Opposition Spokesman on Health, Dr. Fenton Ferguson wants the Government to assure the country that the necessary preventative measures are being taken.
Dr. Ferguson is also concerned about the country’s ability to withstand an outbreak of the virus.
The Health Ministry had also called press conferences on two occasions on the weekend but later cancelled them citing the need to advise the Cabinet of the situation regarding the H1N1 Influenza cases.
